Installed Stretch via netinst on an Intel desktop. Selected mate and ssh server as software to install in the Stretch installer. After install get logon screen with user and password box and bar across to with system name, date/time and some icons on the right. Login as root but get a blank desktop. Debian wallpaper, no icons, taskbar or menu across the top of screen. Mouse pointer is shown and moves. Left-click with mouse nothing happens. Right-click with mouse gives menu box. Ctrl-Alt-Del allows shutdown/reboot dialog. Login as user get the same, ie Debian wallpaper and a mouse pointer only.

Can access machine via ssh without issue.

Reinstalled Debian Jessie using its netinst with same software however updated kernel to 4.9 from Jessie backports. Mate desktop v1.8 displays correctly.

Hardware: Asus H170-Pro motherboard with Intel core i7-6700. Graphics identify as HD Graphics Skylake GT2. Monitor is a Dell E2210. Keyboard and mouse plugged in via USB.

Reboot PC, makes no difference.

Reinstalled again using same netinst, makes no difference.

Installed on 4 other machines with Nvidia graphics and they work correctly.

Hi.

It would be interesting to know, what MATE relevant package you have
actually installed on the problematic machine and which are missing...

Please send output of:

dpkg -l "*caja*"

and

dpkg -l "*mate*"

btw... I use MATE on an Intel GPU without problems.

Thanks,
Mike

I noticed that Netinst 9.1 had been made available on Debian.org, so download it and wrote to USB memory stick. Booted off USB on another machine (identical config to the other one) and installed Stretch. When asked for additional software selected only Mate desktop and SSH server. After completing install rebooted machine and was greeted with the user/password boxes, filled in and got the same wallpaper and no icons again.

I have 8 of these machines all running Jessie without issue. It seems I just can't install Stretch on them. Hardware configuration: H170-Pro motherboard, Intel i7-6700, 16Gb memory, 1Tb western digital SSHD. Using on-chip graphics. They have had Intel-microcode package (20170707) applied.

I got a couple of i3's-6100T that I also tried it on. Installed using netinst 9.1. Using built-in graphics on an ASUS Z170 motherboard. After installing reboot, enter user name and password only to get the Debian wallpaper again.

On a whim reinstalled it but selected Debian desktop, Mate and SSH server. It also gives the wallpaper-only. Selecting Mate + SSH server installs 933 packages. Selecting Debian desktop, Mate and SSH server also installs 933 packages.

On a clean-installed Stretch (Intel core i3 using built-in graphics) machine which was only displaying the Debian wallpaper after login I then installed kernel 4.11 which seems to fix the issue. I had to ssh into the machine and install Linux-image-amd64 from Stretch-backports. After install reboot. Desktop now displays icons, menu bar and task bar.

Kernel installed by Stretch netinst 9.1 would appear to be 4.9.30. Kernel from Stretch-backports appears to be 4.11.5

Clean installed again after yesterdays point release of Stretch (9.2). I only has a 9.1 netinst which installed kernel 4.9.0-3. After a reboot and no desktop again ssh’ed into the machine and did apt update && apt upgrade. That offered kernel 4.9.0-4 (4.9.51) which I installed. After a reboot the desktop comes up with status bar, icons and task bar as expected.

I think you can chalk this one up to a kernel bug in versions 4.9.0-3.
