This package already existed in Wheezy and Jessie and was removed as obsolete, when mediawiki itself was dropped: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=810127 Since mediawiki was reintroduced, it would be nice to also have the extensions back. Personally, I want to set up a mediawiki with LDAP authentication and it would seem to make sence to have this available not only by manual installation, but for all debian administrators.
The group of extensions in the previous mediawiki-extensions package was a mixed bag of random extensions that someone at some particular point in time wanted. Some are not maintained anymore, severely outdated, and won't work with modern versions of MediaWiki. On the other hand, others are included in the "mediawiki" package itself and receive security and maintenance updates from the MediaWiki core development team. The LDAP authentication extension for MediaWiki has no upstream maintainer currently, and anyone should be wary of taking on the responsibility for security support for it. I (personally) am open to packaging some MediaWiki extensions, but I think they would need to be reasonably popular, and have an active upstream contributor that would be willing to assist with security support. So instead of setting up another random grab bag of extensions, I'd rather see individual extensions packaged, e.g.: * https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=871580 * https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=871594
Okay, that sounds reasonable, of course. Surely, it's better to have packages containing only what people really need. Sorry, if I am not familiar with the processes involved in packaging as this is my first usage of the Debian reporting system. Thus, I also apologize for the duplicate #878263, as I simply did not realize I do not get replies to this issue, automatically. Given the circumstances, my next question would be how to continue at this point. Personally, I would think that LDAP authentication would be a common requirement, but this is not the definition of "reasonably popular". So, how would this be evaluated? Furthermore, upstream support seems to have been dropped: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:LDAP_Authentication Are you by any chance aware of any way to do LDAP authentication, that is still supported?
That's alright, I've closed that ticket, we can discuss here. According to <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Special:ExtensionDistributor> this is the third most popular extension, so I think it meets the criteria of reasonably popular. So I think the most important next step would be to find an upstream maintainer that is willing to provide security support for the length of the Debian release cycle. I'm not. The mediawiki-l mailing list (<https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/mediawiki-l>) would be a good place to ask.
Hi, I currently need to provide a media wiki with an ldap. In organisation it make sense to use ldap. A support for it can be great. Also but it's a little off topic here the support of semantic-mediawiki. If needed i already deploy the ldap plugin and it's working. I will configure the group mapping one in a near future. I also write a email to the semantic-mediawiki mailing list in order to get more information. For the record the installation use composer and i think that will broke the debian stable package (need to make few tests) I never maintain or create a full compliante debian package but i'm ready to help if i can.
