using the stretch version in e.g. Frankfurt (eu-central-1) one gets
(after some fiddling with the 400 response):

   E: Failed to fetch s3://foo.amazonaws.com/dists/stretch/main/binary-amd64/Packages  400  HTTP Error 400: Bad Request - The authorization mechanism you have provided is not supported. Please use AWS4-HMAC-SHA256.

This is well supported in 1.3.0 so a backort would be nice.

Hi Guido,

I know it's late but I'm going to ask anyway.
Do you still want this to be backported to Stretch when it's already oldstable?

This issue has been sorted in 1.3.0 which is in current stable, so if this is
something which will work for you then please feel free to close this bug
report.
