cdebconf-gtk-terminal: Please don't depend on unmaintained vte

serious stable testing unstable 5 months ago

The old vte 0.28 series has not had a release since GNOME3's release in 2011.

Please port your app to the vte2.91 source. That also means porting
your app to gtk3. gtk3 was declared stable over a year ago with the
3.22 series. (There also have not been any gtk2 maintenance releases
since that time.)

We do not intend to release Debian 10 "Buster" with the old src: vte.

On behalf of the Debian GNOME team,
Jeremy Bicha

Hi,

AFAICT, the cdebconf-gtk-terminal bug (#887649) has not been updated in
the past 8 months. Is it still realistic to remove vte before the
transition freeze (2019-01-12)?

Thanks,
~Niels

I agree that I don't see anyone working on that bug now. I think
porting to gtk3 and getting rid of the unmaintained vte version is an
important goal for Debian. I'd like to leave this bug as RC for Buster
until the Transition Freeze.

Thanks,

The only thing using the old vte in Debian is cdebconf-terminal. But
since that's a critical package that hasn't been converted yet, let's
defer vte's removal until Bullseye.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like there was progress on #887649 this
cycle either. So I fear that we'll end up needing to tag both #887649
and #885563 bookworm-ignore. :(

Kind regards

Philipp Kern <pkern@debian.org> (2022-10-16):

I'm keeping an open mind but given the remaining time, and the otherwise
important workload on firmware and other things, it looks to me working
on this is likely to trigger more immediate questions/problems than
we'll have time to figure out before it's time to release.

Cheers,

The transition/toolchain freeze for bookworm is today, so it's clearly
too late to port d-i to GTK 3 for bookworm, and we are stuck with vte
for another cycle.

I have started trying to port the graphical d-i to GTK 3, but it's too late
to seriously consider landing that work this cycle, so vte will have to get
another stay of execution.
