My system is somewhat memory constrained. Lots of Chromium and Firefox tabs and
a kvm running.
Sometimes when I open a new tab in Chromium (= need another 200-300 MiB of RAM
because Chromium uses multiple render processes) my system freezes for several
seconds instead of swapping somethin unneeded out. Even Xorg freezes and my
mouse hangs. Sound stops playing, too.
Eventually it recovers and starts to swap out to make room for the new Chromium
process. But I'm afraid some day it won't recover.
Actually I got a couple of unrecovered hangs in the last few months but I don't
have kernel logs of them. Considering the behaviour of my laptop (hdd leds,
wlan led etc.) I suspect those hangs to be unresolved page allocation stalls,
too.
My disk setup for home and root filesystems is as follows: md/raid1 with two
devices --> cryptsetup LUKS (dm_crypt) --> LVM
