I noticed that parcimonie bloats the systemd user journal with lots of
fingerprints of keys that could not be found. On spinning rust with a
large keyring this is a significant amount of I/O bandwidth, extra disk
space usage and a noticeable amount of journald and rsyslog CPU usage.
There is no reason for parcimonie to be logging not found keys, since
having keys in one's keyring that are not on the public keyservers is
a legitimate use-case that parcimonie users are likely to be doing.
The string being output is from GnuPG, so the fix is probably to tell
gpg or dirmngr to not output not found keys, or to filter the output.

$ journalctl --user --follow

 parcimonie - privacy-friendly helper to refresh a GnuPG keyring
Closes: 900388
Changes:
 parcimonie (0.11.0-1) unstable; urgency=medium
 .
   [ Ulrike Uhlig ]
   * Update VCS fields to point to Salsa.
 .
   [ intrigeri ]
   * New upstream releases (0.10.4 and 0.11):
     - Drop support for GnuPG < 2.1.
     - parcimonie-applet is officially deprecated and unsupported upstream.
     - Don't bloat the logs with fingerprints of keys that could not
       be found (Closes: #900388). Also, hide spurious
       "dirmngr:Network:/usr/bin/dirmngr:1:1:" output.
     - Miscellaneous code and test suite improvements.
     - Documentation:
       - Drop information that's been obsolete since GNOME 3.
       - Clarify the status and future of parcimonie-applet.
       - Take into account the default GnuPG configuration in Stretch.
   * Update upstream signing key.
   * Add build and runtime dependencies on libmoox-strictconstructor-perl,
     as required by the new upstream version.
   * Update packaging and dependencies: only GnuPG 2.1+ is now supported.
   * Disable two brittle upstream tests.
   * Migrate existing debian/tests/pkg-perl/skip-smoke to smoke-skip.
   * Make the status of the current applet clear.
   * Declare that debian/rules does not need root.
   * Bump debhelper compatibility level to 11.
   * Declare compliance with Policy 4.1.5.

What has it been replaced by?

This doesn't seem to have fixed the problem for me after a reboot.

Paul Wise:

Nothing yet. parcimonie-applet(1p) now reads:

DEPRECATION WARNING
       The underlying technologies have been deprecated in GNOME 3 and GTK+ 3.14.
       The author of this applet does not use it anymore. Therefore, the author
       cannot support it and this applet will be removed from the parcimonie package
       at some point, unless someone takes over its maintenance.

   Future plans
       GNOME

       Modern GNOME technologies will be supported at some point, most likely in the
       form of a GNOME Shell extension; the exact user interactions have not been
       designed yet. For more details, see:

https://bugs.debian.org/799942
https://bugs.debian.org/850217

       Other desktop environments

       Ideally, someone should create an applet that works for non-GNOME users,
       possibly using the FreeDesktop Status Notifier Item specification. It would
       have to talk to the parcimonie daemon over D-Bus.

Ouch, too bad. Reopened.

Cheers,

Hi Paul,

intrigeri:

I'm sorry I have no idea what's going on:

 - I cannot reproduce this locally even though I have plenty of keys in my
   keyring that are not on the keyservers.
 - I've copied one of your sample errors
   ('gpg: key "0123456789ABCDEF0123456789ABCDEF01234567" not found: Not found'),
   passed it through the regexp and it successfully filters it out.

Could you please:

 - apply the attached patch
 - kill + start parcimonie
 - send me the relevant bits of the Journal (ideally, redirecting its
   output to a file and signing that file, to ensure the text is not
   mangled in transit)

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
