filing this idea as a wishlist bug against the usrmerge package.

btw: what do you think about providing usrmerge in stretch-backports?

I am closing this bug because:
- it is not immediately obvious how this could be implemented easily
- we are changing usrmerge to immediately convert the system at
  installation time, no questions asked
