Some PDF documents cause a crash in poppler 0.71.0. I can reproduce it with
evince and get the following error message:

terminate called after throwing an instance of 'std::logic_error'
  what():  basic_string::_M_construct null not valid
Abgebrochen

This is reported and fixed upstream [1]. There you can find also an example PDF
document, which triggers the crash.

Fixed upstream 4 years ago and is fixed in current debian stable.
