Filing it against this pacakge as the rng-tools seems to be in some odd
transitional limbo.

Looking into the entropy debacle (especially on my devboards) and how other
distributions do things I noticed that e.g. fedora ships rng-tools 6.x from
https://github.com/nhorman/rng-tools. One of the features that provides is
jitterentropy support to generate random numbers without needing a hw rng.

This is quite useful as it allows one to just install rng-tools and take
advantage of either a hwrng or if not needed use software instead. Avoiding to
have to install both rng-tools and either jitterentropy-rngd or haveged on
generic images.

It would be really great if this package would receive an update before the
Bullseye freeze/release.

Upstream moved to https://github.com/nhorman/rng-tools/ as both Sjoerd and bug
#970388 mentioned.
Release 6.10 (https://github.com/nhorman/rng-tools/releases/tag/v6.10) would
already be a great improvement, but if you'd use a recent snapshot (ceb30b2ea
or later), that would also fix bug #847962.
I already tried to entice upstream maintainer to release a new version in
https://github.com/nhorman/rng-tools/issues/105#issuecomment-732994509 but
coming from the maintainer of Debian's package of it may likely carries more
weight.

Version 6.11 has just been released :)
The tag is V6.11 (capital 'V'), but another tag with lowercase 'v' should be
added this weekend or Monday (https://github.com/nhorman/rng-tools/issues/114)

Having 6.11 in Bullseye would be great.

We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of
rng-tools, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive.
