   * What led up to the situation?

- Installed emacs-gtk
- Added MELPA in the package repositories
- Installed helm-unicode

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?

- when issueing "helm-ucs" -> emacs just crashes

- I uninstalled emacs, and installed it with nixpkgs (nix-env): this version
does not have the problem

I can't reproduce this.
I'd guess it is a font-related crash like https://debbugs.gnu.org/30045
If it still happens to you with Emacs 27.1, I suggest you report it upstream with M-x report-emacs-bug.
