I see this in the journal

Going back to 1.22.1-1 solves the problem for me.

Just wonder if anyone was able to reproduce this. This patch is adding good functionality (locking the screen before suspend) so reverting is not the correct solution. Before I start investigating this, I would like to know if it works correctly for some people. I have a few friends that run Debian with Mate and everyone that I talked to says it regressed for them. Can anyone verify that this patch is working correctly for them and not triggering an inhibitor timeout? If the new version of this package works correctly for you, I would like to try to reason what is different about our environments. I guess the easiest way to know is to click suspend from the shutdown dialog and see if your machine takes a bit of time to suspend. You will also be able to use the machine during the 5 second delay before suspend.

Seems I spoke too soon. Gnome Keyring was timing out due to its new version conflicting with mate-session-manager) and the session was taking a long time to start on login. I built mate-session-manager with the latest patch added there in salsa from Martin to fix that. My session now takes 5 seconds to suspend. I am also now getting a session freeze on resume. I use a screen reader Orca and it stops talking so I assume this is what is happening. I am not sure what the problem is but wanted to update you with my findings.

Please disreguard the message I just sent. I did a fresh install of Debian and the screen is locking again even with the patch applied from Martin to Mate Session Manager. I did all sorts of installing and setting changing when trying to troubleshoot the bug with the long pause and mate-session-manager when loggin in. I must have goofed something up with all my troubleshooting because the screen is locking again and everything is working fine. I apologize for the noisy incorrect message a few minutes ago. I assumed that that patch or the new version of mate session manager broke something. Feel free to close this.

I'll add a final bit of information. I discovered that the thing that I did while troubleshooting  that caused my problem was installing xfce4 but I am not sure which dependency causes the problem. One of the dependencies causes the mate screensaver to start misbehaving. With xfce4 installed, it takes 5 seconds to suspend (this is with me logged into Mate not xfce). When resuming, I am prompted to enter my password. After that a few seconds later, my screen reader stops talking. I incorrectly thought my sessionwas crashing. By switching away with CTRL+ALT+F5 and then CTRL+ALT+F7 to switch back, I am presented with another unlock dialog and after entering my password in that one, I can use the system again. All that was required here was installing XFCE, I didn't launch the session even once on this new install.
