Dear Maintainer, Normal usage of apticron. Sometimes the mails generated by apticron bounce. Looks like exim4 does not want to transport mails with lines longer than 998 characters. I temporarily configured apticron to send mail to a local account to get the mail before the bounce. Found that the mail contains the following line with 1071 characters: ########## --- Changes for libreoffice (fonts-opensymbol gir1.2-lokdocview-0.1 libjuh-java libjurt-java liblibreofficekitgtk libreoffice libreoffice-base libreoffice- base-core libreoffice-base-drivers libreoffice-calc libreoffice-common libreoffice-core libreoffice-draw libreoffice-gnome libreoffice-gtk3 libreoffice-help-common libreoffice-help-de libreoffice-help-en-us libreoffice- impress libreoffice-java-common libreoffice-l10n-de libreoffice-librelogo libreoffice-math libreoffice-nlpsolver libreoffice-report-builder libreoffice- report-builder-bin libreoffice-script-provider-bsh libreoffice-script-provider- js libreoffice-script-provider-python libreoffice-sdbc-firebird libreoffice- sdbc-hsqldb libreoffice-sdbc-mysql libreoffice-sdbc-postgresql libreoffice- style-colibre libreoffice-style-elementary libreoffice-style-tango libreoffice- wiki-publisher libreoffice-writer libreofficekit-data libridl-java libuno-cppu3 libuno-cppuhelpergcc3-3 libuno-purpenvhelpergcc3-3 libuno-sal3 libuno- salhelpergcc3-3 libunoil-java libunoloader-java python3-uno uno-libs-private ure) --- ######### Probably apticron should wrap lines before sending mail.
Hi, thanks for reporting that, it's indeed an issue that should be fixed. I think this would be better addressed by apt-listchanges itself, and I filed a report for that: #1020858 Bests,
Hi, > I think this would be better addressed by apt-listchanges itself, and I > filed a report for that: #1020858 The cause of this problem is the maximum of 998 chars in mail source code lines. See https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc5322#section-2.1.1 78 chars are recommended BTW This is not about the text itself, but about the encoded one inside the mail source code. So we do not need to change apt-listchanges as long text lines are ok as long as the mail source code is correct. apticron uses and distinguish heirloom-mailx and bsd-mailx/mailutils. The first one solves this issue itself by detecting too long lines, switching (and converting) to quoted-printable and break to long lines while adding an = at the end of each source code line which should be continued unwraped after rendering. bsd-mailx/mailutils cannot do this. But you can manually set "Content-transfer-encoding: base64" and converting the input text to bas64 while limiting its length using the fold command. I will attach a patch generated for https://salsa.debian.org/debian/apticron/-/raw/master/apticron?ref_type=heads sglaeser
