Upstream support for the legacy 340 driver series has ended in 2019.

From https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/3142

The Linux 340.* legacy driver series is the last to support the G8x, G9x,
and GT2xx GPUs, and motherboard chipsets based on them. Support for X.Org
xserver version 1.20 was added to the 340.* legacy driver series with
version 340.107, and support for Linux kernels up to Linux 5.4 was added
with version 340.108. No further releases from the 340.* series are
  planned.

Therefore this driver should not be part of bullseye. The bug severity will
be raised during the freeze to kick it out. For now we still need it in
testing as a source for supporting newer kernels in buster-backports.

I just found out about the removal of nvidia legacy 340xx through reddit and I
admit I had not noticed it all those months.
Since the first days of kernel 5.x in debian, back in mid 2019, I was the first
to test if it builds and to find the relevant patch on every new kernel
release. I was hoping this would keep it in the repos for debian 11, but there
are more serious issues as it seems that forced its removal.
Because the package will remain in sid, I would like to ask if you will accept
patches for future versions of the kernel, or, in a few words, if the package
will continue to be upgraded.

I am one of those users who can not stand nouveau at all because of its sub par
performance and, as I have said in a previous bug report, if debian does drop
it one day, I will probably move to arch in order to keep my (old) hw
functioning to its full potential.

Thank you in advance.

I'll try to keep the package updated in sid for supporting newer kernel
versions as long as this is possible with reasonable effort. So only
packaged Debian kernels in sid/experimental will be tested. And patches
must not regress on any (ancient) Debian kernel where the module
previously built.

Once Xorg bumps its ABI again the driver will only work with the older
Xorg in (old)stable.
