Dear Maintainer,

After testing octave --gui on a fresh Debian installation, I noticed that
octave complains about being unable to load FreeSans OTF font when trying
to create a simple 2D plot. As a result, nothing is plotted. Installing
fonts-freefont-otf package resolved the problem.

freefont-otf. So I don’t understand why fonts-freefont-otf was not
installed on your system.

In any case, I don’t see what should be changed at the octave level.

Perhaps he has this setting in his configuration:

APT::Install-Recommends "false";

We could change the Recommend into Depends. Of course, Octave can be
used without plotting, but most users would expect that plotting works
out of the box.
