Dear Maintainer,

This is a known issue that when users perform an apt-upgrade that
upgrades system/kernel components.

Actual Result: "Possibly missing firmware ..." E.g. i915
Expected Result: No messages that firmware may be missing.

This may seem minor and I categorized it as minor but it can actually
discourage people from using Linux/Debian because the message sounds
much more serious than it is and it often does not even apply to the
user's system. Further, if a user experiences any problems such as with
X Windows, they can be misled by the messages thinking that they are
missing graphics drivers etc. when in fact that is not the case.
So, while these mesages seem harmless, they can cause much undo concern
and confusion. If it's hard to autodetect whether the message applies,
then I recommend at least further messaging saying that for example:

"This message applies to older Intel hardware 'XYZ' from year 'XYZ',
if you don't have this hardware, this message does not apply to your
computer and you can ignore it."

Best

Hi,

I don't know if more than it already checks is technically possible or
if your suggestion would help (I don't have the slightest idea from
which year the hardware is I am using or the exact model name without
looking it up, so adding that info would confuse me just as much if not
more I guess…).

In either case apt has and can not do anything about it. It is output
produced by one of the packages which are installed/upgraded. In this
case a codesearch over Debian suggests one of the methods from
/usr/share/initramfs-tools/hook-functions which is contained in
initramfs-tools-core.

I am therefore reassign this bug to them.

Best regards
