‘python-irc’ version “15.0.5” declares many dependencies.

A quick glance at the metadata, and the dependency tree of indirect
dependencies, reveals that at least these distributions are required
to build, test, and install the version “15.0.5”:

* jaraco.itertools (>=1.8)
* jaraco.logging

Some are already in Debian, many are not.

if I might bump this bug report.
Next week, the current version will be 5 years old, and it misses some
intersting features, like the support for asyncio.

I'm pretty sure there's a simple way to package all the modules needed
by the new version of irc.

The recent upstream versions depend on additional Python libraries
that are not yet packaged in Debian.

An apparent bug is crashing the test suite; this has been reported upstream

The latest upstream source release is version “20.5.0”, I am updating the
title of this Debian bug report.

With the new dependencies now packaged for Debian, the blocking bug reports
have been closed; the only apparent blocker is the upstream test suite
failure.

I have included the test failure output in my bug report upstream,
hopefully they can correct what we might have wrong or fix the bug.

to the installed package and we want the bug actually fixed.)

In the meantime this is a patch in Debian packaging that allows progress to
the upstream version.

The upstream documentation needs to be built from source, and installed in
a new binary package.

The upstream source (currently version “20.5.0”) includes documentation
source and a Sphinx build configuration. We need to build this, and create
a new binary package.

The new binary package ‘python-irc-doc’ will contain the library
documentation.

Adding this new binary package will require that the next Debian release
will be to “experimental” suite.

Control: block -1 by 1151194

The upstream Sphinx configuration requires an extension,
‘jaraco.packaging’, that is currently not packaged for Debian.

I have reported (bug#1151194) an Intent To Package for that, and this bug's
resolution is blocked by that one.

We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of
python-irc, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive.

A summary of the changes between this version and the previous one is
attached.
